Choosing sports mats may seem like a minor decision. But when it comes to public facilities, clubs or specialised brands, the material on which users train is also a reflection of quality, safety and image.. A mat is not just an accessory: it is a tool for protection, hygiene and differentiation.
In this article, we explain everything you need to know to make the best decision for your needs, with a technical and practical overview tailored to the most demanding sectors.
When we talk about sports mats, we are not just talking about comfort. We are talking about safety, hygiene, durability and, increasingly, identity.. Whether in a school gym, a high-performance centre or a brand looking to stand out, the choice of material makes all the difference.
That’s why, at ZFoam, we offer you all our knowledge from more than 25 years of manufacturing solutions so that you can make the best decision when choosing the right mat for your facility or professional product.
What makes a mat truly professional?
Not all mats are the same: what sets a technical mat apart from a standard one?
Mats are designed to withstand intensive use without losing their properties.. They are manufactured with specialised foams that maintain their shape, density, and absorption capacity even after hundreds of uses. In contrast, a conventional mat tends to degrade quickly, losing its protective and hygienic properties.
The material matters and how it impacts safety, hygiene and durability.
A technical mat must meet four basic requirements:
- Impact absorption adapted to the sport and the user’s weight
- Foams without PVC or chemical residues, suitable for sensitive skin
- Closed and waterproof surfaces that do not absorb sweat or odours
- Easy to clean, without the need for abrasive products
In addition, we apply special finishes that offer a pleasant feel and premium appearance without compromising safety.
Where are they used and what do the most demanding spaces need?
Mats for schools, public gyms, sports centres…
Public institutions such as town councils, county councils and educational centres choose us for our ability to adapt our mats to local regulations, guarantee safe and certified materials and offer customised formats with logos, institutional colours, or uncommon sizes.
They also value the fact that our foams are antibacterial and easy to clean, which reduces health risks and maintenance times.
Equipment for professional sports clubs and centres
This is where sports performances come. into play Comfort, impact absorption without aggressive rebound, careful aesthetics and non-slip finishes are sought after.. In addition, they also seek to differentiate themselves through the quality of their equipment.
In these cases, the possibility of choosing between specific foams, finishes and total customisation allows us to develop products that exactly meet the customer’s needs.
Tailor-made solutions for brands looking to stand out
Equipment brands value the possibility of co-designing customised products. Specific hardnesses, unique colours, engraving or digital printing, exclusive formats… In this case, we become a strategic partner.
Which technical foams to choose (and why)
PE, EVA, Azote®… which is the most suitable for your use?
The choice of a mat depends largely on its intended use and the materials. From our experience as transformers, these are the most common foams and their applications:
- PE (Polyethylene): Very light and resistant, perfect for school or recreational mats.
- EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate): More flexible and softer to the touch, ideal for floor exercises, gymnastics or yoga.
- Evazote® and Plastazote®: High-purity, lightweight, durable and non-toxic technical foams. Used in tatami mats, high-end mats or demanding institutional environments.
All these foams are processed at ZFoam using CNC cutting, multi-layer lamination, thermoforming and digital printing, allowing us to adapt them to any technical or aesthetic requirement.
Antibacterial, PVC-free and water-resistant foams
Our mats are designed with hydrophobic foams, which means they do not absorb water or sweat, thus preventing mould, bad odours or premature deterioration. They are also free of PVC and phthalates, complying with health and environmental regulations, especially in school or public environments.
Certified sustainability: when quality also cares for the environment.
ZFoam is certified with:
- ISO 9001 (Quality)
- ISO 14001 (Environment)
- ISCC PLUS (circular economy and sustainable materials)
This means that our foams can be bio-circular or recycled, and that our plants comply with strict environmental management standards. For many tenders or CSR policies, this type of certification is no longer an option, but a requirement.

Things to consider when choosing a sports mat
Thickness, density and hardness: the triangle of comfort and safety
- Thickness: For basic gymnastics, 1–2 cm may be sufficient. For high-impact sports, a minimum of 4–5 cm is recommended.
- Density: Defines support and resistance to collapse.
- Hardness (Shore): Influences cushioning and firmness.
ZFoam manufactures mats adapted to each range.
Velvet Touch finishes, non-slip, custom engraving
- Velvet Touch provides softness without compromising grip
- Non-slip textures prevent falls
- Digital printing or laser engraving reinforce the brand image
Formats, colours and logos
At ZFoam we can:
- Include screen-printed or engraved logos
- Manufacture in corporate colours
- Design special formats: roll-up, foldable, puzzle-type, modular, etc.
This is especially valuable for sports brands or institutions seeking to project an image of quality.
